They say the cello is the most moving instrument in the world. Following in the footsteps of Prince Harry and Princess Meghan, cello has become a top choice for weddings. South Africa’s leading electric cellist Carol Thorns takes this instrument to new heights. Her world-wide performances include opening for Vanessa Mae, performing for J Lo and sharing a stage with John Legend.
Carol’s solo album Fireflies in The Rain was nominated for a South African Music Award for Best Instrumental Album and her show Red Cello Electrified was awarded a 4 out of 5 star rating at the biggest Arts Festival in the world, The Edinburgh Fringe.
Through her company Red Cello, Carol has created a series of extraordinary electric string concepts and collaborations that are now popular across the globe: The Bubble (Giant inflatable Sphere), The Galaxy Dress (LED Dress), CODA Africa (Afro-Fusion band) and Rosanthorn Trio (All-girl electric string trio). These magnificent Red Cello acts have featured at international celebrity weddings but are equally fitting for intimate lockdown events (for only 4 people).
A huge thank you for creating the perfect atmosphere at the beginning of what was a spectacular evening. It is always such a pleasure to work with you
Jana van der Walt is an accomplished musician and harpist based in Cape Town and began her musical tuition at the age of six. At age 11 she was introduced to the harp, and has since then pursued her love for the instrument with dedication and passion. She received a number of trophies for her harp playing and her orchestral experience has given her the opportunity to perform in some of the most recognisable concert halls in Europe, including the Berliner Philharmonie, Royal Palace in Stockholm, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie.
In 2013 Jana founded harpNOTED – a successful vehicle through which she pursues solo and ensemble performances, with a variety music from classical to contemporary. HarpNOTED believes that every client should have exactly what they want, she is therefore comfortable to customize her ensemble options and music styles to every client’s specific needs in order to create a timeless and perfect event-suited atmosphere.
Her current involvement in the music community of the Mother City includes being an ad hoc member of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, forming part of various ensembles with a number of acclaimed musicians, and performing on a regular basis as a soloist at a range of different concerts, events and festivals. Apart from her involvement with the arts, Jana is also an accomplished architect practicing at an award-winning firm in Cape Town.
Having Jana playing the harp at our wedding added one of the most exquisitely intimate touches to the ceremony and pre-drinks. It truly enhanced the entire experience and added a wonderfully ethereal, classical layer of depth to the wedding as a whole. Besides being an exceptionally talented harpist, Jana was a dream to work with as a person: always friendly, professional, caring and a wonderful addition to our wedding team. I would recommend her unreservedly, a million times over. — Illustrator Maria Magdalena

Our tips: Book your classical ensemble
Meet the top classical wedding ensembles and musicians in Cape Town. Click on the REQUEST A QUOTE button to send an enquiry email to all the ensembles/musicians or click on their image to send a single enquiry.
We are lucky to have an endless amount of incredibly talented classical musicians in and around Cape Town. Choose experienced classical artists that know the do’s and don’ts with decorum and dress code when it comes to weddings. If possible, go see them perform ahead of time to ensure your own peace of mind.
You may prefer to have a classical ensemble playing in the background before, during and after your ceremony and/or during pre-drinks before guests are seated for dinner. This is always a popular choice. Your classical musician or ensemble will also be able to play your ceremony walk-in and exit songs if you prefer. If you have any special requests, inform them ahead of time to give them time to practice (if the song is not already in their repertoire).
Some tips to keep in mind: You need to supply suitable seating for each musician and also (very importantly!) remember to supply ample shade and protection against the elements. Your musicians will also be grateful if you supply cold beverages for them nearby.
A professional ensemble can help make your wedding day unforgettable and just add that extra special touch. There are many great classical musicians around Cape Town – which is undeniably the artistic hub of South Africa. No matter how acquired your taste as a couple, there is something for you and you will find world class musicians right here in the Western Cape!
