Founded in 1997, Elbeth Gillis is internationally known for her bridal and evening couture. Relentless in her pursuit of distinction and refinement, Elbeth searches for only the most opulent French laces and the most sumptuous silks, satins and chiffons made by prestigious fabric houses that are known to supply royalty.
“As a young girl, I was surrounded by the beauty of fabrics. I was brought up in a family of creatives who designed and hand-created our own clothing, my aunts and mother made their own designs and they brought beauty and grace to the garments they sewed. I knew then and by the age of 12, I was determined to study fashion! Bridal and dress designing is actually the only career I have done! I am now designing the 23rd collection for Elbeth Gillis, when a bride comes to us for a bridal gown, they are receiving a wealth of history and dress designing!”
Stocked by boutiques around the world, Elbeth takes private appointments in Cape Town, South Africa. At the Elbeth Gillis Atelier, each gown is carefully handcrafted to ensure impeccable fit and quality.
I would like to thank you and the rest of the team, for that wonderful dress. There was not a second, that I was feeling uncomfortable in it or that I wanted to get changed. It partied through the night, resisted the bush and the sand and kept up to all expectations. Getting the dress from you, was one of the best decisions I made regarding the wedding. I added the sneak peaks, that I received from our photographer. You are welcome to use them if you wish. – Kerstin
The story of our gowns is one of art and beauty, artisan skills, and ancient craftsmanship steeped in the magical world of couture. Influenced by an undying affinity with the romance of bohemia, our signature slow luxury aesthetic is grounded in ancient artisan techniques, uncomplicated styling, and easy elegance. Designed and hand-cut our couture gowns are hand-beaded in our quiet Atelier in India. Using the ancient Indian art of Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. Tambour Beading was first introduced to the Western world in 18th century France, where it was named after the French word for drum.
Its origins, some believe, are from Gujarat, India, where it was recognised as early as the 16th century as a technique used for beading luxurious designs onto fine fabrics. Lovingly hand-dyed in loose-leaf White Tea, our gowns celebrate a feminine and carefree romanticism with delicate hand beading and embroidery using the ancient Indian art of Tambour.
We strive to encourage handmade creations and work to honour and protect the craft of Tambour in every collection. We incorporate this age-old technique into each design as it produces finer, more intricate work than machine beading, which is a favoured method in garment manufacturing today.
I wore the most incredible Bo & Luca gown which they call the Hudson. Bo & Luca were the only dress brand I visited and as soon as I put the Hudson gown on I was finished. The gown was made from the most beautiful satin that was silky soft. It fit like a glove and was so comfortable. I remember walking into the showroom with one specification in mind for my gown. “I would like to be able to sit barefoot on the grass with my legs crossed.” The Hudson gown allowed for that movement, especially when on the dance floor! – Amber Abrahams

Every bride has a style and of course every bride has something to flaunt and perhaps some parts they’d rather conceal a little. A good design and fit is paramount! You will be in your dress all day, so it has to be comfortable to dance and move in. However unlike every other day of your life it won’t be a comfort vs style battle. Have both!
Once you have picked your dress, make sure alterations have been taken into consideration with the time that there is left. You want it to be absolutely perfect. Complete your bridal ensemble with veil, shoes, jewelry and any other chosen accessories – follow your designers advice on what goes with the tones of your dress.
Here are some wedding dress trends to take into consideration when choosing your dream dress:
• The modern bride is edgy and has attitude. Take your personality into account when choosing your dress. Don’t reinvent yourself on your wedding day, rather be true to yourself.
• Blush is the new white.
• Ball gown? Think fluffy, weightless and whimsical.
• Winter wedding? Coat dresses, long sleeves and high necklace have never been more beautiful.
